BOSQUE del APACHE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

I HAVE HAD SEVERAL QUESTIONS CONCERNING BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY AND WHAT IS MY FAVORITE LOCATION.  ONE OF THE PREEMINENT SITES IN THE USA AND ONE OF MY FAVORITES IS BOSQUE DEL APACHE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.  IT IS LOCATED ABOUT 20 MINUTES SOUTH OF SOCORRO, NEW MEXICO AND IS A 90 MINUTE DRIVE SOUTH OF ALBUQUERQUE.  THE BEST WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY IS BETWEEN MID OCTOBER - DECEMBER WHILE THE BIRDS ARE MIGRATING. ON ONE OF OUR VISITS MY WIFE AND I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY OF BEING ASSIGNED TO A RANGER AND ESCORTED INTO SOME OF THE PRIVATE FEEDING AREAS IN THE REFUGE.  IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND ONE WE WILL NEVER FORGET.

THE PRIMARY BIRDS ARE THE SANDHILL CRANES AND SNOW GEESE.  THEY APPEAR BY THE THOUSANDS.  OTHER SPECIES THAT I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PHOTOGRAPH ARE EGRETS, EAGLES, TURKEYS, ROAD RUNNERS, DEER AND MANY TYPES OF WATERFOWL AND OTHER BIRDS.  THE PHOTOGRAPHY OPPORTUNITIES ARE ENDLESS FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET.

THE FLYOUTS AT SUNRISE AND RETURNS AT SUNSET ARE REMARKABLE.  BEST PLACE FOR SUNRISE PHOTOGRAPHY THAT I FOUND WAS THE FLIGHT DECK.  THE FLIGHT DECK IS A LARGE PLATFORM EXTENDING OUT INTO THE LAKE.

AROUND DAWN THE FLYOUT TAKES PLACE AND THE SOUNDS YOU WILL HEAR BY THOUSANDS OF GEESE TAKING OFF AND CIRCLING AROUND IS A SIGHT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET!  MIDDAY THE FLOCKS CAN BE FOUND ON THE NORTH END OF THE FARM LOOP.  THIS IS A PART OF THE 15 MILE LOOP THROUGH THE RESERVE.  YOU CAN DRIVE AND PARK ALONG THE ROAD AND A LOT OF YOUR IMAGES CAN BE TAKEN FROM YOUR CAR. A BEANBAG LAYED OVER YOUR CAR WINDOW OPENING IS A GREAT ACCESSORY TO HAVE.

FOR EQUIPMENT I WOULD RECOMMEND A GOOD TRIPOD WITH A WIMBERLEY TYPE HEAD FOR SHOOTING BIRDS IN FLIGHT, YOUR LONGEST LENS, AND A FULL FRAME BODY AND LENS FOR CAPTURING THE BIRDS FLYING INTO THE SUNRISE ETC.

AN ORGANIZATION CALLED FRIENDS OF THE BOSQUE DEL APACHE NWR TRACK AND POST SIGHTINGS WITHIN THE REFUGE.  ITS A GREAT PAGE TO SEE WHAT IS CURRENTLY USING THE REFUGE.  YOU SHOULD LOOK THIS UP BEFORE GOING.  http://www.friendsofthebosque.org/

EVEN IF YOUR NOT INTO PHOTOGRAPHY THIS IS A GREAT PLACE FOR BIRD WATCHING.  ITS AN EXPERIENCE THAT YOU WON'T FORGET.

REGARDS,

DON
